What Is a Graphic Novel?

A graphic novel is a full-length story published as a book that is often presented in comic-strip format. Distinctive features include:
 
      –Written for a mature audience
 
      –Published in hardback or paperback and sold in bookstores
 
      –Includes serious literary themes and sophisticated artwork
 
Cartoonist and author Will Eisner described graphic novels as "consisting of 'sequential art'--a series of illustrations which when viewed in order, tell a story."
