CSE Style Manual

R 808.066 S416
The standard style guide for the natural and physical sciences is the Scientific Style and Format: the CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, 8th edition, 2013.  We commonly refer to it as the "CSE Manual".

CSE (Council of Science Editors) used to be called CBE (Council of Biology Editors), but CBE was changed to CSE to be more inclusive of all the sciences.

The CSE Manual presents three systems for referring to a reference within the text of a published work, including journal articles, books, or other scientific publications.  They are citation-sequence, name-year, and citation-name.  The system of in-text references used will determine the order of references at the end of the document.  These end references have the same format except for the placement of the date of publication in the name-year system.  CSE uses the Citation-Sequence for its own references.
